Synology caves, walks back some drive restrictions on upcoming NAS models

Synology has announced that some of its 2025 model-year NAS devices will now support the installation of non-validated third-party drives, reversing its previous drive restrictions. The company had previously required the use of special Synology-branded hard drives, claiming they underwent additional validation for reliability and performance. This change in policy comes after Synology expanded its verified drive policy to its entire Plus line of DiskStations earlier this year. The move is seen as a pro-consumer decision to address concerns about the high cost of Synology-branded drives compared to off-the-shelf options.
