A Detailed Evaluation of A Production Server With High-End MRDIMM Main Memory (BSC, Micron, Intel, UPC)

Researchers from Barcelona Supercomputing Center, Universitat Politecnica de Catalunya, Micron, and Intel Corporation published a technical paper on the benefits of Multiplexed Rank DIMMs (MRDIMMs) in a production server. The upgrade to MRDIMMs from conventional RDIMMs increased bandwidth by 41%, resulting in 27-41% higher performance for bandwidth-bound workloads. The latency improvement in MRDIMMs also benefited memory-sensitive workloads. Despite similar power consumption levels at the same bandwidth utilization, MRDIMMs delivered up to 30% server energy savings for memory-bound workloads.
