Legendary Microsoft developer reveals the true story behind the most famous product activation key of all time — infamous Windows XP 'FCKGW' licensing key was actually 'a disastrous leak'

Legendary Microsoft developer Dave W. Plummer has revealed the true story behind the infamous Windows XP licensing key 'FCKGW-RHQQ2-YXRKT-8TG6W-2B7Q8,' which was actually a leaked volume licensing key rather than a hack. Plummer, who worked on the early development of Windows Product Activation (WPA), explains how the key was whitelisted in XP's activation logic, allowing it to bypass activation prompts. Despite WPA's intended security measures, the leaked key became widespread knowledge among software pirates before the official release of Windows XP. Plummer warns that the key was blacklisted years ago and recommends using later versions of Windows XP for stability and driver support.
