Tinkerer builds VR headset with CRTs repurposed from Sony Watchman — makeshift VR rig isn't the sharpest, but eliminates screen-door effect

A tinkerer named dooglehead repurposed CRTs from Sony Watchman portable TVs to create a unique VR headset that eliminates the screen-door effect but only displays in black and white due to shadow mask constraints. By using an FPGA dev board, he enabled HDMI input and built a tracking system with an IMU for rotational tracking and an HTC Vive tracker for positional tracking. Despite the DIY headset's blurry display and lack of color, it provided a retro charm and anti-aliased look that combats the screen-door effect common in VR headsets. Dooglehead concluded that while the CRT VR headset was an interesting experiment, it's too outdated for regular use compared to modern high-resolution displays.
