AMD reportedly establishes $280 million silicon photonics hub in Taiwan — new R&D center could accelerate company's co-packaged optics roadmap

AMD is reportedly establishing two new R&D centers in Taiwan focused on silicon photonics, heterogeneous integration, and AI-related technologies, with a total investment exceeding $280 million. The centers aim to accelerate talent development and research in fields such as silicon photonics and heterogeneous integration. AMD's acquisition of Enosemi earlier this year strengthened its position in silicon photonics, enabling the company to design its own optical interconnects. By collaborating with TSMC and universities in Taiwan, AMD aims to optimize its silicon photonics developments and potentially introduce new platforms with optical technologies to compete with Nvidia's offerings in the future.
