Scientists find ways to boost memory in aging brains
Virginia Tech researchers conducted two studies targeting age-related molecular changes in the brain to improve memory in older subjects. The first study focused on K63 polyubiquitination in the hippocampus and amygdala, showing that adjusting this process improved memory in older rats. The second study centered on reactivating the IGF2 gene, which supports memory formation, through gene editing, resulting in enhanced memory in older rats. These findings suggest that memory decline in aging brains is influenced by multiple molecular systems, offering potential insights for treating memory-related conditions like Alzheimer's disease.
