Here’s how deepfake vishing attacks work, and why they can be hard to detect

Fraudulent calls using AI to clone familiar voices, known as deepfake vishing attacks, are on the rise, with scammers impersonating relatives, CEOs, or colleagues to trick victims into taking urgent actions like sending money or sharing sensitive information. The Cybersecurity and Infrastructure Security Agency has highlighted the exponential increase in threats from deepfakes and synthetic media. Google's Mandiant security division reported that these attacks are becoming more sophisticated, making them harder to detect. Security firm Group-IB outlined the ease of reproducing these attacks at scale and the challenges in identifying and defending against them.
