Supersized chip family gathers for the 54th anniversary of the Intel 4004 CPU — 4001 ROM, 4002 RAM, and 4003 shift registers feature in a reconstructed Busicom calculator build

To celebrate the 54th anniversary of the Intel 4004 CPU, a reconstructed Busicom calculator build featuring the 4001 ROM, 4002 RAM, and 4003 shift registers has been unveiled. The project, led by Tim McNerney, recreated the entire Intel 4000 family from discrete transistors, with the supersized calculator set to be exhibited at the Enter Museum in Switzerland next year. The larger 4004 CPU runs twice as fast as the original, reaching speeds of up to 1.5 MHz. This impressive exhibit required extensive digital archeology and meticulous craftsmanship to bring these historic components back to life for public display.
