A frustrated developer has created the No Longer Evil Thermostat project to revive Google's sunsetted Nest Gen 1 and Gen 2 thermostats, offering better control and an intuitive interface through open-source software. Arizona-based developer Cody Kociemba, motivated by Google's abandonment of these devices, worked on this project to provide users with a local web interface and integration with Home Assistant. The project, which is still in testing, allows users to regain control over their outdated thermostats but comes with a warning that flashing the experimental firmware could potentially brick the device.
