If We Want Bigger Wind Turbines, We’re Gonna Need Bigger Airplanes

Radia is developing WindRunner, an aircraft longer than a football field designed to transport massive wind-turbine blades that are currently limited in size due to transportation constraints. The plane will be able to carry one 105-meter blade or two 95-meter blades, landing on makeshift dirt runways near wind farms. The project aims to enable the deployment of larger onshore wind turbines, which can generate more energy at a lower cost per megawatt. Despite challenges like infrastructure limitations and carbon emissions, Radia believes the benefits of larger turbines outweigh the drawbacks, potentially doubling wind energy profitability.
