Gnome 50 Ends the X11 Era After Decades

With the upcoming GNOME 50 release in mid-March 2026, the desktop environment will officially drop support for the native X11 session, making Wayland the sole display system moving forward. XWayland will still support traditional X11 applications within the Wayland session. This shift allows GNOME to focus on advancing Wayland-based workflows, such as fractional scaling, HDR, color management, and input handling. Users relying on Xorg/X11 sessions may need to transition to Wayland, while X11-only applications can still run via XWayland. Extension authors and tooling developers are advised to test Wayland compatibility or plan fallback strategies.
