Fujitsu plans dedicated 1.4nm AI chip manufactured entirely in Japan by Rapidus — AI chip to be designed and manufactured domestically

Fujitsu is set to develop a dedicated AI chip using a cutting-edge 1.4nm process by Rapidus, with the chip aimed at AI inference in servers. The project, partially funded by Japan's NEDO, will see the chip entirely designed and manufactured domestically. Fujitsu plans to integrate these NPUs with its Arm-based Monaka CPUs for applications like the Fugaku NEXT supercomputer. The move aligns with Japan's push for sovereign AI capabilities and reduced reliance on foreign technology, with Rapidus also making strides in advanced semiconductor production.
