Four things we’d need to put data centers in space

SpaceX has proposed launching up to a million data centers into Earth's orbit to fully leverage AI potential without harming the environment. However, there are significant technological challenges to overcome, such as managing heat dissipation in space, developing radiation-resistant computer chips, avoiding space debris collisions, and ensuring economical launch and assembly of data centers. While some experts believe these hurdles could be surmountable with existing technology, others raise concerns about maintenance, potential catastrophic loss during space weather events, and the impact on Earth's atmosphere from increased debris reentry. The feasibility of large-scale orbiting data centers remains uncertain, with smaller facilities likely to be the initial focus before scaling up.
