China to increase leading-edge chip output by 5x in two years, report claims — aims to lift 7nm and 5nm production to 100,000 wafers per month, targeting half a million monthly by 2030

China is aiming to increase its leading-edge chip output by five times in two years to meet the demand in the domestic AI sector. The country plans to boost production of chips using 7nm and 5nm technologies to 100,000 wafers per month within one to two years, with a target of half a million monthly by 2030. Semiconductor Manufacturing International Corp. (SMIC) is currently the only company in China capable of producing chips on 7nm processes. Despite challenges in equipment procurement, SMIC is expected to continue expanding its capacity, particularly on trailing nodes. Other entities like Hua Hong Semiconductor and Huawei-linked companies are also ramping up their capacities in advanced logic manufacturing.
