AMD adopts FRED together with Intel for Zen 6 architecture — replacement for decades-old IDT can improve performance and stability

AMD is revamping its CPU architecture for Zen 6 chips by adopting Intel's FRED instructions, replacing the outdated IDT mechanism. The x86 Ecosystem Advisory Group facilitated this collaboration between AMD and Intel. FRED promises improved performance and stability by streamlining system event handling and reducing CPU cycles. The Linux kernel already supports FRED, and its implementation in upcoming chip lineups like Intel Nova, Panther Lake, and AMD Zen 6 is anticipated. This advancement is expected to benefit low-level software like operating systems and drivers.
