A new open-weights AI coding model is closing in on proprietary options

French AI startup Mistral AI has introduced Devstral 2, a 123 billion parameter open-weights coding model that achieves a 72.2 percent score on the SWE-bench Verified benchmark, placing it among top-performing open-weights models. Alongside the AI model, Mistral also launched Mistral Vibe, a command line interface (CLI) that allows developers to interact with the Devstral models directly in their terminal. The CLI can scan file structures, maintain context across projects, make changes across multiple files, and execute shell commands autonomously. Mistral released the CLI under the Apache 2.0 license. Additionally, Mistral released Devstral Small 2, a 24 billion parameter version that can run locally on consumer hardware and supports a 256,000 token context window for processing moderately large codebases.
